Non-American Tire Brands Made in The USA

Now, what about those tires that are manufactured in America, with top quality controls, but they are actually owned by foreign companies?

They should have a place in this article, right?

Well, that’s why I made the following list of non-American tire manufacturers that make their tires in the USA.

Michelin

Manufacturing Plants

  • South Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • Alabama
  • Indiana

Michelin is a French foreign tire company headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region of France. It is one of the world’s four largest tire producers, along with Bridgestone, Continental, and Goodyear.

It makes tires for planes, vehicles, buses, motorbikes, bicycles, earthmovers, farm equipment, and trucks.

They are a pioneer in sustainable mobility. In fact, the Michelin Group’s objective is to contribute to the advancement of sustainable mobility by providing solutions that enable access to mobility and liberate the movement of commodities and people.

Regarding their footprint in America, the French company has production facilities in South Carolina, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Indiana.

Continental

Manufacturing Plants

  • Illinois
  • Ohio
  • North Carolina
  • Kentucky
  • South Carolina

Continental is a German automotive manufacturing firm specializing in tires, brake systems, interior electronics, and other vehicle-related products.

Continental is at the cutting edge of innovation when it comes to tires. The company specializes in ultra-high performance tires, all-season tires, and winter tires.

They have plants in Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, Kentucky, and South Carolina. So, if you’re searching for a high-quality tire made in America, Continental tires (despite being a German brand) can be an excellent option.

Pirelli

Manufacturing Plants

  • California
  • Georgia
  • Tennessee

Pirelli is an Italian tire manufacturer based in Milan, Italy. It is the fifth largest tire manufacturer behind Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental, and Goodyear and is focused on the tire market.

They manufacture tires for regular cars, SUVs, trucks, classic cars, and even racing cars!

Dunlop Tires

Dunlop Tires is an International Dunlop Group brand that was founded in 1891. It is based in the United Kingdom and is a fully owned subsidiary of the Michelin Group. The company manufactures a variety of high-performance tires for automobiles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles.

Even though they are not that popular in America, they still got one manufacturing plant in Tonawanda, New York, where they employ American workers to manufacture their tires. So credit where credit is due!

Yokohama

Manufacturing Plants

  • Mississippi
  • Virginia

Yokohama is a global tire company that offers high-performance, light truck, bike, passenger car, and commercial truck tires. The company was founded in 1917 and has been producing tires since 1920.

It is currently the fourteenth largest tire manufacturing company in the world, so you’d think the brand is not that important, yet it is.

To give you an idea of how famous the brand is, it is the official tire supplier for IMSA sports car racing, Super GT racing, World Touring Car Cup (WTCR), Formula Drift, and Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Regarding their presence in America, they’ve got two manufacturing facilities, one in Mississippi and one in Virginia, which shows the level of internal demand this Japanese company has in the US.

How to Spot Tires Made in the USA

The Department of Transportation (DOT) code is a serial number mandated by the United States government for all tires designed for public road use.

The DOT code, which can be found on the sidewall of every tire, allows consumers to identify when and where a tire was manufactured and its size, manufacturer, and other information essential for safe operation.

Each tire manufacturing plant must have a unique number assigned to it, which will follow the “DOT” symbol in the tire.

So, the simplest way to tell if a tire is made in America is to look for the “DOT” symbol in the tire followed by three numbers that indicate the tire manufacturer’s unique plant code, find the code in the table down below, and you’ll know if the tire was manufactured in America.
